What is SEO and why your website needs it – SEO Notebook

Date posted: June 17, 2025

What is SEO?

In short, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is optimizing your website so search engines like Google (or Yahoo or Bing—if you even use them) can understand and index it, showing your website to visitors as results based on the input keywords they use.

My Experience with SEO

When I first started out as a web designer, I must admit that SEO was the last thing on my mind. I was much more focused on design and the technical aspects of bringing my website to life. SEO was an afterthought—more like tips and tricks I applied to my website as much as I could remember. I set up the correct HTML tag hierarchy for the website to the best of my ability, configured pages and permalinks, and enabled the website to be indexed by search engines. I also purchased the Pro version of SEO plugins like SEOPress and went through their checklist to ensure there were no SEO errors or anything I might have missed. Since the whole SEO process can sometimes become tedious and boring, I personally would rather spend my time sharpening my design and development skills.

Why Your Website Needs SEO and Why I Want to Focus on It Now

The longer I work as a professional web designer and the more websites I create and publish—for myself and for my clients—the more important I find SEO to be. It could even determine whether a website succeeds or not. The higher and more often a website appears when people search for relevant keywords, the more visits, traffic, interaction, and, in turn, revenue and paying customers it can generate. That’s why I’ve decided to refocus and spend more time learning and diving deep into the world of SEO.

My Plan for Studying SEO

I purchased the SEO course from Lytbox Academy a while back and skimmed through it, taking some notes to apply to my projects, but nothing too serious. I’ve now decided to watch all the lessons again, document my notes, and share my journey here under the tag “SEO Notebook,” where I will also archive resources I’ve come across related to SEO that benefit my work.

You can also check out Lytbox Academy’s SEO Course here. Jeffrey is a great teacher who puts things in simple language that’s easy to understand. He also speaks from experience, and the course includes a lot of hands-on practice you can try and apply to your own projects: https://lytboxacademy.com/seo-for-wordpress-course/
