Tips to improve Arm Triangle finish (and when to abandon it)

Date posted: June 9, 2025

II’ve been having trouble finishing with the arm triangle recently, so I’ve asked Coach Alan for feedback on how to troubleshoot the submission. Here are a couple of ideas I’ll keep in mind for the next roll:

  • The Setup: When setting up the arm triangle, use your head to move their arm across to the side instead of prioritizing the squeeze with your arm and shoulder. If you can no longer control their arm and there’s too much space to maneuver between their arm and neck, you should abandon the submission and transition to a back take, side control, or mount.
  • The Elbow: When you have successfully made the grip in the arm triangle, plant your near-side elbow down on the mat and use it as a post to drive your force and tighten your squeeze.
  • The Head & Hip: Keep your head sticky to their temple while moving away; your hip should be as close to the mat as possible and moving away from their hip as far as possible while still maintaining the squeeze and keeping your elbow on the mat.

That’s all for now. I’ll review this and attempt the submission next time in class.
