The unread library effect

Date posted: June 29, 2025

There’s an idea called “the unread library effect,” which refers to when a person collects a huge number of books and tends to have a false sense of confidence in their knowledge and humility.

The only way books can transfer into knowledge is by actually reading them and applying those ideas and lessons to your thinking and life.

Having the internet and technology provides people with the means to access any information within seconds. Any news, facts, or stories are just a few taps of a screen away. With AI now helping with logic and reasoning, people tend to overestimate their own knowledge.

Owning a race car in your garage without spending time on the track doesn’t make you a racer. Signing up for a gym membership without putting time into working out doesn’t get you in great shape. Purchasing a bunch of books without actually reading them doesn’t make you a reader. And I, for one, love being a reader.
