“The cards look okay (for now)” – Blog design update

Date posted: April 26, 2025

I finished setting up the archive page for the writing, reading, and watching sections of the blog yesterday.

I spent a huge chunk of my working hours yesterday adding the books and movies, which involved downloading the posters and optimizing them for the website (resizing and converting them to WEBP), I got the detail from goodreads and the movie database.

I’m trying to design the cards for showing the books and movies listings, but it still feels a bit off. I added a transition (hovering) effect that raises the poster/book cover up by 10px, added more box shadow for depth, and added more white to the background image to give more contrast to the content. I will write a blog post showing how to achieve this effect in Bricks soon.

There have been a few iterations for the cards, but I’m currently happy with the existing version.

The goal today is to add some colors and flair to the status Pill Tag. I’m thinking of utilizing my brand colors that I’ve exported from my business site’s design system, which are blue, orange, and green. Let’s see how it goes from there.

The next idea is that when visitors click on a movie or book card, a popup will appear showing more details with my review, score, quotes, or genres (I will include all of them in the post content; I may change them into taxonomies in the future once there’s a need for it, but not right now). I’m thinking of “Showing single post template in popup.” There is a YouTube video on this matter that I found when I searched for it yesterday. Implementing this should be fun. I will let you know how it goes!

This website is heavily inspired by Chester’s website. It’s a gorgeous website that shows lots of personality. I take notes and revisit his website when working on my own. Thank you Chester!!
