One of my favorite types of projects is redesigning websites, since I get to improve upon the foundation of an existing website. One of the most important aspects that I used to gloss over is maintaining the SEO from the old website to the new one, preventing the loss of traffic and outdated links.
Here are the steps I learned from the Lytbox Academy course. I’ve jotted them down here so I can review and reference them in upcoming projects:
- Determine the strategy; decide if this is for local SEO or international SEO.
- Maintain the meta title and description; optimize where possible.Maintain the H tags and their content; keep the hierarchy the same as much as possible.
- Maintain the sitemap and navigation.
- Keep the URL and permalinks the same as the old website—this is the most important step; don’t change the schema link.
- Set up redirects for old, outdated pages that are not going to the new site.
