Knee Bar basic – Jiu-Jitsu Diary

Date posted: July 8, 2025

Today, I learned the basics of the knee bar submission. Start by controlling their leg by squeezing your knees together, with your feet crossed and your heel planted into their butt to prevent them from running away. Pinch your knees together (remember not to use the figure 4, as you cannot pinch your knees together for better leg control). Their kneecap should be around your hip area (or your genital area). Place their toe on your neck, use one hand to control their ankle, and rest your cheek and neck on their sole or midfoot (eew). Position it into a rear-naked choke grip. From there, you can bridge up on their kneecap, straightening their leg.

To escape the knee bar, the premise is somewhat similar to escaping the straight ankle lock: free your toes, lift your butt off the mat, bend your knee, make a boot, and kick forward. You can hip rotate to escape, but keep in mind that when you try to escape the knee bar, your heel will likely be exposed, and they can go for the heel hook.
