When you enter the world of SEO, you’ll see the word “index” mentioned frequently. Here are some terms and their definitions to provide you with more context:
What is “Index”?
The index is the database search engines use to store information about websites. Imagine a huge list of websites with their meta information that Google is ready to pull up and show in search results based on input keywords.
What is “Indexability”?
Indexability is how easily a search engine can crawl, read a webpage, and add that webpage to its index. Well-built websites that follow best practices can have great indexability.
What is “Indexed Page”?
An indexed page is a page that has been successfully crawled, added to the search engine’s index, and appears in Google’s search results. You can check which pages have been successfully indexed by adding the prefix “site:<website url that you want to check>” into Google search.
What is “No-Index”?
“No-index” is a rule you can set on certain pages or your entire website (in case your site is under maintenance) so that search engines understand not to add those pages to their index. Those pages will not show up in search results.
Some Notes:
- There are certain pages you don’t want to be indexed, such as “cart” and “checkout” on an e-commerce site, or the templates saved for headers and footers if you’re using a page builder. You can index the “privacy and terms” page to build trust in your website.
- Turn on the “Discourage search engines from reading this site” option in WordPress Settings > Reading when you are designing and building the website. Turn it off once the site is ready to be launched, and the URL, page title, and meta description have been completed and checked.
- In WordPress Settings > Permalinks, set the Permalink Structure to Post Name. Remember that adjusting permalinks can easily mess with the entire website and its indexed pages. Tread carefully and set up redirects if needed.
