Half-guard passing & Kimura from half-guard – Jiu-jitsu Diary

Date posted: May 19, 2025

Some notes on what I learned today in Jiu-Jitsu class about half-guard passing and how to perform the Kimura from half guard, even when they hide their arm:

5 Steps of Passing the Half-Guard

  1. From the half-guard, pass your knee on top of their bottom leg to reduce their control and prevent them from sweeping you during the process.
  2. Punch your fist between their top leg and bottom leg, ensuring your thumb faces their belly.
  3. With your other arm, post behind their head to prevent them from stretching out or shrimping away.
  4. Rotate your leg to free the trapped leg entirely, take a step above their head with your outside leg, and replace your post hand with your knee.
  5. Move to their back and slide your elbow between their elbow and knee (inside position).

To Perform the Kimura from Half Guard

  • Keep a high knee shield, use the push-and-pull method to let them fall on you, simultaneously grab their outside arm, form the Kimura grip, move your body perpendicular to your opponent’s, adjust your wrist, and perform the submission.

In Case They Hide Their Arm While You Have the Kimura Grip

  • Bring your high knee shield up and place it in your opponent’s shoulder pocket (their collarbone). Weave your leg and bring it over their head, press your leg down, and maintain control of their lats or shoulder. Move your leg to their hip and kick their hip away while simultaneously pulling their arm out with the Kimura grip (1). Bring your leg back to their lats, move your body perpendicular to theirs, and continue the submission.

(1) There’s an armbar opportunity here. If you don’t bring your leg back to their lats but thread it to the other side of their hip, trapping their arm in place, you can perform an armbar from there.
