Back to roots – Jiu-jitsu Diary

Date posted: June 11, 2025

It’s been a while since I dropped in at Gisdio to roll with the night class and enjoy some time with the guys—back to the room where everything started and literally changed my life. It got me hooked on Jiu-Jitsu, and I’ve been training since. I’ve come here happy, sad, angry, tired, motivated, hurt, but I’ve never regretted a day of rolling and learning with my friends and coaches. I’ve made friends and gotten to know amazing people.

The class today was fun. The warm-ups knocked the wind out of me, as usual. We drilled pulling guard that transitions to a half-guard sweep, which is simple yet quite effective. From standing, pull guard and hook your half-guard to their far leg, control their near-side leg with your arm, and sweep them by pushing on their hip while tripping them at their ankle (kind of like the tripod sweep). For the second drill, we started from closed guard, got an overhook (grip their gi collar for more control as well as to break their posture), and from there, pushed our feet on their hips and transitioned to an armbar, omoplata, or triangle.

The main focus of today’s class was half-guard passing, which is one of my favorite passes and something I’m trying to learn more about. From the half-guard position, prioritize isolating their arms and head by digging for the underhook on their far-side arm with your far-side arm. Stop their top leg from sweeping you by controlling their knee (grip their pants if you’re in a gi). Squeeze your far-side leg into their hip, gaining inside position. From there, it should be easy to get your trapped leg out and move to side control (or more like when your body and your opponent form a “+” icon). You can perform an armbar on their top arm (far-side arm) or transition to an Americana if you have the right grip; an arm triangle is also an option.

I was in the shark tank for 5 rounds and gassed out by the end. I got submitted a couple of times—all in good fun—the guys are still as tough as I remember. I’m already looking forward to next time.

Take care and have a great day wherever you are. Oss!
